Who Is Actually Eligible for This Degree
The honest answer has nothing to do with whether your board called you "Science," "Commerce" or "Humanities." It has to do with one line on your Class 12 marksheet.

Mathematics Honours students consistently outperform Commerce and Arts backgrounds on the early actuarial papers, since the exams are the same Real Analysis and Probability you already studied.
RBI Grade B, DSIM (Statistics Cadre)High applicant volume, small eligible pool
Entry route: Requires a Master's degree in Statistics, Mathematical Statistics, Econometrics or a closely related quantitative field, not a Bachelor's alone. A Mathematics Honours graduate typically completes a relevant Master's before appearing for the DSIM stream of the RBI Grade B exam, held in two written phases plus an interview.

Lakhs compete for one JEE seat. A few hundred compete seriously for DSIM each year, because almost nobody outside Statistics and Mathematics postgraduates even knows the cadre exists.
Entry route: Mathematics Honours prepares you directly for the UPSC CSE Mathematics optional paper, sat alongside the standard General Studies papers. No separate degree requirement beyond graduation in any discipline.

Mathematics has consistently posted one of the stronger success-rate profiles among UPSC optionals, mainly because fewer people attempt it and those who do tend to have a genuine background in it. That is a real, if self-selected, advantage.
Indian Statistical Service (ISS)Moderate competition, narrow eligibility
Entry route: Requires Statistics, Mathematical Statistics or Applied Statistics as a specific subject in your Bachelor's or Master's degree. A Mathematics Honours graduate qualifies only if their programme included sufficient Statistics papers, check your university's syllabus against UPSC's ISS eligibility list before assuming you qualify.

Can Humanities or Arts students do Mathematics Honours?

Can I join RBI's Statistics cadre straight after a Mathematics Honours degree?
Not directly. RBI Grade B's DSIM specialisation requires a Master's degree in Statistics, Mathematical Statistics, Econometrics or a closely related quantitative field, not just a Bachelor's. A Mathematics Honours graduate typically needs a relevant Master's before appearing for the DSIM stream.
Is the two-crore cryptography salary realistic for a fresh graduate?
No. Entry-level cryptography and cybersecurity roles in India realistically start between eight and fifteen lakh a year. The two-crore-plus figure belongs to senior leadership positions such as Chief Information Security Officer, reached after ten to fifteen years of specialised experience. It is a real ceiling, not a typical outcome.
Should I choose Mathematics Honours or a BSc Statistics degree?
