Jobs Safest From AI Automation, Ranked: Why Physician Beats Software Engineer for the #1 Spot

Most people already think coding jobs are at risk from AI, and the numbers agree. This page ranks 10 different jobs, physician to software engineer, by how much of each one's real, everyday work AI can already do. Every single fact here is backed by a named study or report, so you don't have to just take our word for it.

πŸ”„
πŸ”„

Where the ten ranks land: Physician, the job families worry about most, comes in at #1, AI still can't do the core of it. Software engineering comes in at #10. Most people expect that already, but the actual gap between the two is bigger than you'd think. Every rank below tells you exactly which study or report it comes from.

πŸ”’ The Key Numbers
~700
In 2013, Oxford researchers Frey and Osborne studied close to 700 jobs to see which ones AI could take over. Physicians came out as one of the safest.
75%
The share of a typical programmer's workday that AI research group Anthropic found could already be done by AI, the highest of any job it measured.
43%
The average score across all jobs on that same measure. Software engineering's 75% is way above this average.

Every job below has the reel's one-line reason, the real research behind it (clearly named), and what it actually takes to get that job in India, plus expected pay. If two studies disagree, we say so instead of hiding it.

1
Physician
🟒 AI Risk Level: 1 of 3 (Low)

"AI can suggest a diagnosis, but the doctor still makes the final call."

In 2013, Oxford researchers Frey and Osborne studied close to 700 jobs to see how easily AI could take over each one. Physicians came out as one of the safest. Why? A doctor has to physically examine a patient, make judgment calls, and take legal responsibility for the final decision. AI can't do any of that by itself yet.
πŸ“š Source: Frey & Osborne, Oxford University (2013)
The honest caveat on this one
Not everyone agrees. Some newer studies that look at how AI tools like ChatGPT are used today rate doctors as more at risk, because so much of the note-writing and diagnosis-support work is already being done by AI. What still looks safe is the actual exam, the legal responsibility, and tricky judgment calls, not the paperwork around them.
For Indian StudentsHow to become a doctor in India: clear the NEET-UG exam, complete a 5.5-year MBBS (this includes a 1-year internship), then register with your State Medical Council. Starting pay is roughly β‚Ή50,000 to β‚Ή1,50,000 a month in government hospitals, and β‚Ή40,000 to β‚Ή90,000 a month in private ones. Senior doctors in private practice often earn β‚Ή1.5 to β‚Ή3 lakh a month or more.
Anshul's take: parents worried about AI replacing doctors are usually worried about the wrong half of the job. AI is taking over the notes, not the exam room or the final decision.
2
Mental Health Counsellor
🟒 AI Risk Level: 1 of 3 (Low)

"AI can take the notes, but healing still runs on human trust."

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics expects mental health counsellor jobs to grow 17% between 2024 and 2034, about 3 times faster than the average job. That's around 48,300 new openings every year. This field needs more people, not fewer, even as AI note-taking tools become common in the room.
πŸ“š Source: US Bureau of Labor Statistics
For Indian StudentsIn India, RCI (Rehabilitation Council of India) registration is required to work as a licensed clinical psychologist, usually through an M.Phil in Clinical Psychology after a postgraduate degree. An M.Sc in Psychology can get you counsellor or junior roles in hospitals, schools and wellness centres. Pay after M.Phil usually starts around β‚Ή4.7 lakh a year and can reach β‚Ή8 to 15 lakh a year in private practice. Government institutes like NIMHANS pay around β‚Ή68,000 a month. Independent practice is usually billed per session, roughly β‚Ή1,500 to β‚Ή5,000.
Anshul's take: this is the rank that surprises people the most. Trust between two people isn't something an app can build. That's really the whole reason.
3
Electrician
🟒 AI Risk Level: 1 of 3 (Low)

"AI can plan the layout, but every wire still gets pulled by hand."

McKinsey, a global research firm, says installation and repair jobs like this one have only a 4 to 6% chance of being automated, one of the lowest of any job type it studied. Two other reports (JLL and the Associated Builders and Contractors) say over 2 million skilled trade jobs, electricians included, could go unfilled by 2030. AI itself is even creating more electrician jobs right now, since AI data centres need people to wire them.
πŸ“š Source: McKinsey Global Institute; JLL and Associated Builders and Contractors
For Indian StudentsHow to become an electrician in India: a 1 to 2 year ITI Electrician trade certificate, followed by an apprenticeship. No degree needed. Private-sector starting pay is roughly β‚Ή12,000 to β‚Ή18,000 a month, government or Railway jobs pay roughly β‚Ή25,000 to β‚Ή34,000 a month, and with 5 or more years of experience, pay can reach β‚Ή35,000 to β‚Ή80,000 a month.
Anshul's take: parents chase degrees assuming that's the safe route. A wire that has to be physically pulled through a wall doesn't care how many degrees are in the room.
4
Registered Nurse
🟒 AI Risk Level: 1 of 3 (Low to Medium)

"AI can track a patient's vitals, but bedside care still needs a human."

McKinsey found that less than 10% of a nurse's job can be fully automated, though up to 15% of a nurse's time could be freed up by AI tools rather than replaced. That extra time matters, because the World Health Organization says the world is short 5.8 million nurses. AI isn't anywhere close to filling that gap on its own.
πŸ“š Source: McKinsey Global Institute; WHO, State of the World's Nursing 2025
For Indian StudentsTwo paths to become a nurse in India: a 3.5-year GNM diploma, or a 4-year BSc Nursing degree, both followed by registering with your State Nursing Council. BSc-qualified government Nursing Officers can earn over β‚Ή75,000 a month in some states. Entry-level government staff nurse pay is usually β‚Ή25,000 to β‚Ή45,000 a month, and private-sector fresher pay is roughly β‚Ή12,000 to β‚Ή40,000 a month. GNM pay usually starts 20 to 30% lower than BSc pay.
Anshul's take: a shortage of 5.8 million people isn't something software fixes. This is way more demand than supply, AI or no AI.
5
Plumber
🟒 AI Risk Level: 1 of 3 (Low)

"AI can spot a leak, but someone still has to physically fix the pipe."

The Associated Builders and Contractors, a US construction industry group, says the construction sector needs about 349,000 new workers in 2026 alone. No AI tool fixes that, because the actual job is physically finding, cutting, sealing and testing pipes inside real buildings.
πŸ“š Source: Associated Builders and Contractors
For Indian StudentsHow to become a plumber in India: usually an ITI Plumber trade certificate, or learning directly on the job. No degree required. Pay is roughly β‚Ή12,000 to β‚Ή45,000 a month depending on experience and city, and can reach β‚Ή60,000 to β‚Ή70,000 a month with 7 or more years of experience in big cities.
Anshul's take: 349,000 open jobs in a single year isn't a number AI closes. It's a number that needs more hands, right now.
6
Lawyer
🟑 AI Risk Level: 2 of 3 (Mixed)

"AI can draft contracts and do the research, but the courtroom still needs a lawyer."

Frey and Osborne's original study rated lawyers as low risk, because the job needs high skill and doesn't follow a fixed routine. But the same study rated paralegals and legal assistants as high risk, because that work is repetitive and paperwork-heavy. So "lawyer is safe" isn't the whole story: arguing in court and advising a client are safe, but legal research and drafting documents are already being taken over by AI.
πŸ“š Source: Frey & Osborne, Oxford University (2013)
The honest caveat on this one
There's a real pay gap behind this too. A fresh litigation lawyer working under a senior advocate typically earns β‚Ή10,000 to β‚Ή40,000 a month, and that grows slowly. A fresh corporate lawyer at a big firm can earn β‚Ή5 to 12 lakh a year, and top firms pay β‚Ή18 to 20 lakh a year for freshers. The part of the job that's actually safe here, courtroom work and advising clients, is closer to the lower-paying litigation side than the high-paying corporate drafting side.
For Indian StudentsHow to become a lawyer in India: a 5-year integrated LLB (like BA LLB), or a 3-year LLB after a bachelor's degree, then enrolling with a State Bar Council to practice.
Anshul's take: "being a lawyer is safe" and "doing paralegal work is safe" are two different claims. This ranking is only backing the first one.
7
Physical Therapist
🟒 AI Risk Level: 1 of 3 (Low to Medium)

"AI already helps write the session notes, but recovery still needs human hands."

The American Physical Therapy Association put out an official notice in September 2025 about AI tools that write session notes automatically. On one major clinical software platform, the number of therapists using AI note-taking jumped from about 4% in September 2025 to about 45% by February 2026. That tells us the note-writing part of the job is going to AI fast, but actually treating a patient's body by hand is not.
πŸ“š Source: American Physical Therapy Association (2025)
The honest caveat on this one
That jump from 4% to 45% comes from just one clinical software company, not a count of every physical therapist in the country. It's a real and fast trend, but it's one company's numbers, not a national average.
For Indian StudentsHow to become a physiotherapist in India: a 4.5-year BPT degree (includes an internship), then registering with your state physiotherapy council. Entry-level pay is roughly β‚Ή15,000 to β‚Ή30,000 a month, rising to around β‚Ή40,000 a month or more with a few years of experience. Private practice pays more.
Anshul's take: the note-writing got automated fast. Nobody's built a robot that can actually rehab someone's knee. That gap is the whole rank.
8
Elementary School Teacher
🟑 AI Risk Level: 2 of 3 (Medium)

"AI can grade the papers, but a classroom still needs a real person."

A nationwide survey by RAND Corporation found that teachers using AI for classroom tasks doubled, from 25% to 53%, between the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years. But that jump is mostly in the admin and prep side of the job, grading, worksheets, lesson-planning drafts, not in the actual teaching happening inside the classroom.
πŸ“š Source: RAND Corporation
For Indian StudentsHow to become a teacher in India: a 2-year B.Ed after a bachelor's degree, plus a teacher eligibility test (CTET or your state's TET) for most government school jobs. Government school starting pay is roughly β‚Ή35,000 to β‚Ή50,000 a month. Private schools usually start lower, around β‚Ή15,000 to β‚Ή20,000 a month, rising with experience.
Anshul's take: doubling in two years is a real trend worth watching. But it's still the grading half of the job changing, not the teaching half.
9
HR Manager
🟑 AI Risk Level: 2 of 3 (Medium to High)

"AI already screens resumes and books interviews before a person steps in."

SHRM, a major HR research body, expects 85% of resume screening and 90% of benefits admin work to be automated between 2025 and 2027. That's the fastest-moving job on this list, other than software engineering.
πŸ“š Source: SHRM 2026 Report
The honest caveat on this one
SHRM's own research adds an important detail: AI is 5.7 times more likely to change what an HR role does than to remove the role completely. So the job shifts shape, screening and admin work move to AI, and more of a person's time goes toward decisions like who actually gets hired, more than the job disappearing outright.
For Indian StudentsMost HR Manager roles expect an MBA or PGDM in HR, though many people start in general HR roles and specialise later. Fresher pay is roughly β‚Ή3 to 5 lakh a year, and an HR Manager with 5 to 8 years of experience typically earns β‚Ή9 to 16 lakh a year.
Anshul's take: the screening part of HR is disappearing fast, and that's a real shift worth planning around. The people-management part isn't gone, but it's a smaller job than it used to be.
10
Software Engineer
πŸ”΄ AI Risk Level: 3 of 3 (High)

"AI already writes most of the code here, more than any job on this list."

Microsoft's own CEO has said that about 30% of the company's code is now written by AI. More than 40% of Microsoft's 2025 layoffs were engineers, and jobs for developers aged 22 to 25 dropped nearly 20% between late 2022 and mid-2025. Separately, Anthropic, an AI research company, found that about 75% of a programmer's typical workday can already be automated, the highest of any job it measured, compared to a 43% average across all jobs.
πŸ“š Source: Anthropic Economic Index; Microsoft public statements
For Indian StudentsHow to become a software engineer in India: usually a B.Tech or BE in Computer Science or a related field, though more people are also getting in through coding bootcamps and a strong project portfolio. Fresher pay at big IT companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro) is roughly β‚Ή3.5 to 7 lakh a year. Product companies and startups pay roughly β‚Ή6 to 15 lakh a year for the same experience level. The national fresher average is around β‚Ή4 lakh a year.
Anshul's take: most people already sense coding work is at risk. What the data adds is exactly how much, 75% of a programmer's workday already overlaps with what AI can do, higher than any other job Anthropic measured, and well above the other nine jobs on this list.

10 Jobs, Not Every Job

This ranking covers 10 specific jobs picked for the reel. It isn't a list of every job that exists. Plenty of other careers sit on both ends of this same spectrum, worth naming even without the full research write-up each of the ten above got.

🟒 Other jobs that look fairly safe too: veterinarian, firefighter, childcare worker, construction site supervisor, and other jobs where you need to be physically present and trusted by people.
πŸ”΄ Other jobs that look more exposed: data entry clerk, call-centre and customer-support agent, bookkeeper, translators doing routine text work, and paralegals specifically (Frey and Osborne rated this one as high risk, separate from lawyers themselves, see rank 6 above).

Our Method, In Plain Words

Here's how each job got its rank: we looked at how much of the job's real, everyday work, the actual exam, the courtroom argument, the pulled wire, the written code, AI can already do, not the paperwork around it. This comes from real, named research: automation studies, labour reports, industry notices and adoption data, named for every rank above and listed again in full in the Sources box below. One honest note: these sources don't all measure things the same way. Frey and Osborne's 2013 study estimated the chance a job could be automated one day. Anthropic's 2025 study measured how much of today's actual work already overlaps with what AI can do. So read each rank as "here's what the research says about this specific job," not one single score you can compare exactly across all ten. Wherever research disagrees with itself, or comes from just one company, we say so in the caveat under that job, instead of hiding it.

❓ Frequently Asked

Questions Viewers Actually Ask

Is software engineering really the least safe job on this list?
On this ranking, yes. Anthropic found that about 75% of a programmer's typical workday can already be done by AI, the highest of any job it measured, compared to a 43% average across all jobs. Microsoft's CEO has said about 30% of the company's code is now written by AI. This doesn't mean software engineering has no future, it means the actual coding part of the job is the most exposed to AI of the ten jobs here.
Does this mean AI will never affect doctors?
No. Frey and Osborne's Oxford study rated physicians as one of the safest of about 700 jobs studied, and that holds up well for the hands-on exam, the legal responsibility, and tricky judgment calls. But some newer research that focuses more on today's AI tools rates doctors as more at risk, mainly because of note-writing and diagnosis-support work. Both can be true at once, the paperwork is exposed, the actual doctor part isn't.
Why does a mental health counsellor rank higher than a lawyer?
Because this ranking looks at the actual work, not pay or prestige. A counsellor's real work, building trust and making judgment calls with a person in the room, has almost no AI replacement yet. A lawyer's job splits into two parts: arguing in court and advising clients are safe, but legal research and writing documents, the same work Frey and Osborne separately rated as high risk for paralegals, is already being taken over by AI.
Is this ranking Anshul's opinion, or based on real research?
It's based on named, real research: Frey and Osborne's Oxford study, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, McKinsey Global Institute, WHO's nursing report, the Associated Builders and Contractors, the American Physical Therapy Association, RAND Corporation, SHRM, and Anthropic's Economic Index. Every one of these is named next to the rank it backs, not presented as someone's opinion.
What's the difference between core work and paperwork here?
Core work is the part of the job that actually defines it, a doctor's hands-on exam and final decision, an electrician's pulled wire, a counsellor's in-the-room judgment call. Paperwork is the notes, scheduling and admin work around that core job, and that's the part AI is automating fastest across almost every job on this list, even the ones ranked safest.
Should I give up on software engineering because of this ranking?
No, not on its own. This ranking compares AI exposure across ten specific jobs, it isn't full career advice. Software engineering ranking 10th means the actual coding work is the most exposed here, not that the field has no future. If this ranking is making you rethink a career choice either way, that's worth exploring properly instead of deciding off one ranking. AptiGuide's free career aptitude test is built exactly for that.
