IPMAT Personal Interview Preparation: Clearing the Written Exam Only Buys You a Ticket, Not a Seat.

IIM Indore's own admission procedure puts the Personal Interview at 35 percent of your final Composite Score. Most students spend six months on the written exam and open zero books for this round. Here is the complete roadmap for both, verified against the institute's own document.

📌

The honest scale of it: IIM Indore's 2026-31 batch Admission Procedure names exactly two components in the final Composite Score, Aptitude Test Score at 65 and Personal Interview at 35. Nothing else carries separate weight. This page is built from that document and cross-checked against IIM Indore's own admissions page, not from what performs best on a coaching hoarding.

There Is No Separately Scored "WAT" Round Right Now

A lot of prep content, and some older coaching material, still talks about a "WAT-PI" round at IIM Indore, a Written Ability Test plus a Personal Interview. That used to be accurate. It is not what IIM Indore's own current Admission Procedure document describes.

The official 2026-31 batch brochure defines the Composite Score in one line: Aptitude Test Score (65) plus Personal Interview (35), PI conducted "through online or offline mode." No separately scored writing round is listed anywhere in the document. One independent admissions tracker marks WAT explicitly as "removed from last year" in its selection-ratio table.

What this means practically: if you are preparing on the assumption that a scored essay round still exists, redirect that time. The 35 percent is about how you think and speak under a panel's questions, not a timed essay. General written and communication practice still helps, since it builds the same clarity-of-thought the panel is testing, it just is not a separately scored WAT anymore.

What the Written Round Actually Tests

IPMAT Indore is a computer-based test with three sections, attempted strictly in order, 40 minutes each, no returning to a completed section once time is up.

SectionTypeQuestionsMarking
Quantitative AbilityShort answer, direct entry15+4, no negative marking
Quantitative AbilityMultiple choice30+4 correct, -1 wrong
Verbal AbilityMultiple choice45+4 correct, -1 wrong

A realistic 6-month runway: Month 1 covers exam pattern familiarity and foundation topics in arithmetic, algebra and reading comprehension. Months 1-2 build core fundamentals, percentages, ratios, profit and loss, vocabulary and grammar through daily reading, prioritising concept clarity over memorising shortcuts. Months 2-4 move to topic-wise practice, progressing from easier to harder questions, with daily reading comprehension and vocabulary work. Months 4-5 introduce sectional tests under timed conditions. Months 5-6 shift to full-length mocks, at least twice a week, each one followed by a proper error analysis, plus previous-year papers. The final month is revision only, no new topics.

Where Students Lose Marks
⚠️Uneven revisionHeavy time on strong areas, weak topics get whatever is left, and the weak topics are usually what decides the cutoff.
⚠️Avoiding mocks until latePostponing full-length attempts means you meet the real exam pattern for the first time on exam day, not months before it.
⚠️Inconsistent daily effortLong breaks followed by intense cramming lose to shorter, regular sessions almost every time.
⚠️Ignoring weak topics entirelyComfort-zone practice feels productive. It does not move a cutoff-deciding weak section.
⚠️No structured planWithout one, entire topics get missed and revision time never gets allocated properly across the syllabus.

What the Other Round Actually Looks Like

Per IIM Indore's own document, shortlisted candidates appear for the Personal Interview through online or offline mode, as intimated by the institute. Some admissions trackers describe this as a Personal Interview or video-based assessment format, meaning the delivery mode can vary by cycle, but the evaluation itself is one interview-style component, not a separate written test.

Recent-cycle question patterns (these vary panel to panel and year to year, treat as a pattern, not a script): your class 11 and 12 subjects and why you chose them, why IPM specifically over a regular graduation route, general awareness and current affairs, and often a short extempore-style prompt where you think and respond on the spot rather than write it out. Panels are testing clarity of thought and how you hold a real conversation under pressure, not how well you can draft an essay.

An 8-Week Interview Runway
WeeksFocus
1-2Daily current-affairs reading, building your own "why IPM, why business" narrative
3-4Mock conversations with feedback, extempore practice on random topics, timed to 90 seconds
5-6Academic depth revision on your own class 11-12 subjects, self-recorded practice reviewed on video
7-8Full mock panels under real conditions, stress-testing weak spots surfaced earlier
Final weekLight revision only, logistics, confidence, no new material

Frequently Asked

Straight Answers

Does IIM Indore still have a Written Ability Test (WAT) for IPM?

IIM Indore's own 2026-31 batch Admission Procedure document defines the final Composite Score as Aptitude Test Score at 65 percent and Personal Interview at 35 percent only. No separately scored Written Ability Test is listed. Some older prep content still references a WAT round from earlier cycles, and one independent tracker lists it as removed. If you're preparing on the assumption of a scored essay round, that time is better spent on interview readiness instead.

What is the exact weightage between the IPMAT exam and the interview at IIM Indore?

Per IIM Indore's official Admission Procedure for the IPM 2026-31 batch, the Composite Score is Aptitude Test Score (ATS) at 65 percent plus Personal Interview (PI) at 35 percent. Class 10 and 12 marks are used only for eligibility screening, not weighted in the final score.

What is the IPMAT exam pattern?

90 questions across three sections: 15 Quantitative Ability short-answer questions with no negative marking, 30 Quantitative Ability MCQs, and 45 Verbal Ability MCQs, both MCQ sections at plus 4 for correct and minus 1 for wrong. Total 360 marks, 120 minutes, 40 minutes fixed per section, attempted in order with no going back.

How should I split my prep time between the exam and the interview?

Most of a 6-month runway goes to the exam in the first 3 to 4 months, with interview-readiness work like current-affairs reading and mock conversations starting in parallel from month 2, so the final weeks before the interview date aren't a cold start.

What kind of questions come up in the IIM Indore Personal Interview?

Based on recent-cycle patterns, panels typically probe your class 11 and 12 subjects, ask why IPM specifically over a regular degree, test general awareness, and often include a short extempore-style prompt. Exact questions vary panel to panel and year to year.

When should I start preparing for both the exam and the interview?

A 6-month runway before the IPMAT exam date is realistic for the written exam. Interview-specific readiness works best started around month 2 of that same window and built up gradually, not compressed into the weeks between the result and the interview date.
