ESG Analyst Career Map: Degrees, Colleges and Salary. SEBI Just Made This Report Mandatory โ Writing It Can Start You at โน8L a Year.
The full map, not three career names your counsellor has repeated since 2019. Every degree route, every college and fee, every certification, and what the salary actually looks like in year 1, year 5, and year 10, for both the ESG analyst role and its finance-side cousin, the climate risk analyst.
๐
SEBI's BRSR mandate: India's top 1,000 listed companies by market capitalisation must disclose 140 ESG indicators every year in their Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report. A subset of 49 core KPIs is being rolled out for mandatory third-party assurance across all 1,000 companies by FY 2026-27. Someone has to prepare that filing, and someone independent has to check it isn't fake. Neither job existed as a real career path in India before 2022.

Every Career This Mandate Created
The ESG Career Map, By Function
Eight real roles, grouped by where they actually sit inside a company. Each one lists the entry route, the honest salary trajectory, how much competition you're up against right now, and who it actually suits.
ESG / Sustainability AnalystModerate competition
Where it sits: A corporate's in-house sustainability team, usually reporting into the CFO's office or the Company Secretary, because BRSR is a regulatory filing, not a values statement.
Entry route: Any UG works, B.Com, BBA, BA Economics, BSc Environmental Science, even B.Tech in any branch. No postgraduate degree required to enter at analyst level; a certification (see below) matters more than the degree name.
Salary reality: Year 1, โน4โ8L. Year 4โ6, โน10โ15L as the role grows into Sustainability Manager (โน12.5L is the reported average for that title). Year 8โ10+, โน25โ45L as Head of Sustainability.
Right for: Someone who wants business-side sustainability work without becoming a full-time consultant, is comfortable with data and compliance writing, and doesn't need to be client-facing.
This is not a "green NGO job." It exists because a regulator forced it to exist, and it is graded like any other compliance filing.
ESG / Sustainability ConsultantHigh competition
Where it sits: Big 4 ESG practices (Deloitte, PwC, KPMG, EY) and strategy firms like McKinsey, which have all built dedicated ESG divisions in the last two years.
Entry route: An MBA/PGDM with a sustainability elective is the common route, but graduates of TISS's or TERI SAS's specialised master's programmes are also picked directly into these practices without an MBA.
Salary reality: Year 1, โน8โ14L as an associate consultant. Year 4โ6, โน18โ28L. Year 8โ10, โน40โ70L+ at Associate Director level.
Right for: Someone who wants client-facing variety over sitting inside one company, and doesn't mind travel and shifting project teams.
The MBA is a common path in, not the only one. Don't rule this out just because you can't afford or clear a top MBA.
CSR + ESG Integrated ManagerLower competition
Where it sits: Mid-size corporates where CSR spend and BRSR reporting are increasingly managed by the same person, rather than two separate teams.
Entry route: Any UG, strengthened with TISS's shorter Certificate Programme in Innovative CSR, ESG and Sustainability, or a lateral move from an existing CSR role.
Salary reality: Year 1, โน5โ9L. Year 5, โน14โ20L. Year 10, โน30L+.
Right for: Someone who already enjoys CSR or community-facing work and wants to add the compliance and reporting layer that raises the salary ceiling.
CSR alone has a low salary ceiling in most companies. CSR fused with ESG reporting does not.
Climate Risk AnalystLow competition, high urgency
Where it sits: Banks, NBFCs and insurers, tracking how climate-related events affect loan books, portfolios and underwriting. RBI's 2024 climate-related disclosure framework made this function mandatory across regulated entities.
Entry route: B.Com, BBA or Economics, paired with the CFA Institute's Sustainable Investing Certificate or GARP's Sustainability and Climate Risk (SCR) certificate.
Salary reality: Year 1, โน6โ10L at private banks and NBFCs. Year 4โ6, โน15โ22L. Year 8โ10, โน35โ55L as Head of Climate Risk.
Right for: Someone with a finance and risk mindset who wants the ESG angle without leaving the banking sector.
This is a risk management job wearing a sustainability label, not an environmental job wearing a finance label. It rewards people who think in numbers first.
Sustainable Finance / Green Bonds AnalystModerate competition
Where it sits: A bank's Treasury or Debt Capital Markets desk, structuring and pricing green and sustainability-linked bonds.
Entry route: Commerce, Economics or Finance degree, plus a CFA charter track (regular or ESG-focused), the same hiring pool as traditional investment banking.
Salary reality: Year 1, โน7โ12L. Year 5, โน18โ25L. Year 10, โน40L+.
Right for: Someone who already wants markets or treasury work and wants a compounding specialisation layered on top.
A green bond is a bond market instrument first and an environmental instrument second. Price it, and pursue it, like the former.
ESG Due Diligence Analyst (PE / VC)High competition
Where it sits: Private equity and venture capital funds, screening portfolio companies for ESG risk before and after investment.
Entry route: Usually a lateral move after 2โ3 years in core PE/VC analysis, with a CFA ESG certificate as the differentiator, not a first job out of college.
Salary reality: Year 3โ5, โน20โ35L. Year 8โ10, โน50L+, tracking fund structures and carry.
Right for: Someone already inside or actively targeting PE/VC who wants a differentiated niche within that world.
ESG Ratings AnalystModerate competition
Where it sits: Ratings and data houses like CRISIL ESG Ratings & Analytics, MSCI ESG, Sustainalytics and ICRA, grading how honest a company's climate and governance claims actually are.
Entry route: Any analytical UG or PG with strong research and writing skills. A CFA ESG certificate is a genuine differentiator here.
Salary reality: Year 1, โน6โ11L. Year 4โ6, โน15โ20L. Year 8โ10, โน30โ45L.
Right for: Someone who likes structured research work and doesn't need to be client-facing.
You are not planting trees. You are auditing someone else's claims against someone else's framework, which is a very different, and more durable, skill.
BRSR / Sustainability Reporting SpecialistLow to moderate competition
Where it sits: Inside the compliance or company secretary function of any of the 1,000 companies now filing BRSR, owning the filing end to end.
Entry route: B.Com or an accounting background, plus working knowledge of GRI, TCFD and the 49 BRSR Core KPIs. IICA's Certified ESG Professional programme is built specifically for this.
Salary reality: Year 1, โน5โ9L. Year 5, โน14โ20L. Year 10, โน28โ40L.
Right for: Someone who is precise, doesn't mind XBRL-style compliance filing, and would rather own a report than advise on one.
From School to Offer Letter
Every Degree Route That Actually Works
Read this as a ladder. You do not need every rung, but the further you climb it, the stronger your entry point and starting salary.
Class 11โ12
Any stream. No restriction.
Science, Commerce or Humanities all lead here equally. School-level Economics, Business Studies or Environmental Science help build the vocabulary early, but none of them is mandatory.
Undergraduate
Pick one: B.Com, BBA, BA Economics, BSc Environmental Science, or B.Tech in any branch
The UG degree gets you in the door. It is not the filter that screens candidates out, the certification and the role you target are.
TERI School of Advanced Studies (New Delhi) and TISS (Mumbai) run the two best-known versions of this. Full fee and placement detail is in the college table below.
Executive Programmes (usually after 2โ3 years of work experience)
Built for working professionals looking to move into ESG leadership, not for someone applying straight out of college.
Stackable Certifications (the real differentiators)
CFA Sustainable Investing Certificate, GARP's SCR, or IICA's Certified ESG Professional
These can be done alongside any degree above, including while you're still in your final year. Full cost and format detail is below.

๐Why "Abroad" Increasingly Means BangalorePwC's own research now calls global capability centres "the new ESG trailblazers." Multinationals are increasingly servicing their EU CSRD and global ESG reporting needs out of India-based GCCs, meaning senior ESG professionals with 5+ years' experience are being hired at the top of the Indian salary band, โน15โ25L+, without needing to relocate at all.
One More Thing
The Language Requirement Nobody Mentions
Every global ESG framework, GRI, TCFD, SASB, CDP, SBTi, is published and assessed in English, and every CFA and GARP exam is conducted in English. Board-level ESG reporting is written in formal business English regardless of which city you work in. A regional language is a genuine asset for CSR fieldwork and community-facing due diligence, but it is not a barrier to entry: strong English reading and report-writing ability is the one language skill this field actually requires.
Honest Guidance
Is This the Right Career for You?
This career suits a specific combination of interests and background, not everyone considering it.
โAny stream, Science, Commerce or Humanities, you already qualify to enter. There is no biology, no MBA, and no single "correct" degree.
โComfortable with regulation, data and formal report writing, this is compliance work with an environmental subject, not an environmental job with paperwork attached.
โWilling to get certified, the CFA Sustainable Investing Certificate or GARP's SCR pays back in salary premium almost immediately, and neither requires a specific degree first.
โ Entering only because "ESG is trending" without genuine interest in the regulatory and financial mechanics will hit a ceiling fast. The technical depth required grows every filing cycle.
Frequently Asked
Questions Students Actually Ask
Do I need Commerce or Biology to become an ESG analyst?
No. ESG analyst roles are open to Science, Commerce and Humanities students equally. The role exists because of SEBI's BRSR regulation, not because of any single stream, and Engineering, Economics, Environmental Science and plain B.Com or BA graduates all enter this field regularly.
Is an MBA required to work in ESG or sustainability?
No. An MBA helps for consulting-track roles at Big 4 firms, but analyst-level ESG, climate risk and BRSR reporting roles hire directly after a bachelor's degree, especially paired with a focused certification like the CFA Sustainable Investing Certificate or GARP's SCR.
What exactly is SEBI's BRSR mandate?
BRSR, Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report, is a SEBI-mandated annual filing requiring India's top 1,000 listed companies by market capitalisation to disclose 140 ESG indicators. A subset of 49 core KPIs is being rolled out for mandatory third-party assurance across all 1,000 companies by FY 2026-27.
What's the difference between an ESG analyst and a climate risk analyst?
A climate risk analyst sits inside a bank, NBFC or insurer and assesses how climate-related events affect loan books and portfolios, driven by RBI's 2024 climate disclosure framework. An ESG analyst typically sits inside a corporate's own sustainability or company secretary function and prepares that company's own BRSR filing. Both draw on overlapping certifications like GARP's SCR and the CFA ESG track.
Which certification should I do first?
For most students, the CFA Institute's Sustainable Investing Certificate is the most accessible starting point since it has no prerequisites and can be done alongside a bachelor's degree. GARP's SCR is a stronger fit once you're specifically targeting a bank or NBFC climate risk role.
