"International Relations is a fancy Arts degree with no real career unless you clear UPSC or join the foreign service."
The reality: Most high-paying IR careers sit in the private sector: consulting firms, multinational companies, think tanks, and global NGOs. None of them require UPSC. All of them pay very well. And very few IR students know these paths exist.
Every Indian company expanding abroad and every foreign company entering India needs someone who understands geopolitics, culture, regulations, and risk across multiple countries. That person is an IR graduate, but only if they know to position themselves for it.
In my sessions with IR undergraduates and postgraduates, the single biggest confidence killer isn't a lack of options. It's not knowing these roles exist by name. Once a student can say "I want to be a geopolitical risk analyst" instead of "I don't know what I'll do with this degree," their internship applications and LinkedIn outreach change completely, and recruiters respond differently too.

These consultants work with governments or large multinational companies to shape policy decisions worth crores. This is not politics. This is power mapping. When Reliance wants to expand into a new country, or when a foreign tech company wants to navigate Indian regulatory changes, they need someone who understands how governments work, who the key stakeholders are, and how to influence outcomes through legal, legitimate advocacy. An IR degree plus a public policy master's from a strong university is the entry path.

Geopolitical risk analysts study conflicts, elections, sanctions, and regulatory shifts, then tell companies what's coming before it actually happens. When Russia invaded Ukraine, companies with geopolitical risk analysts had already started adjusting supply chains. When elections change trade policy, risk analysts brief boards before the market moves. These are the strategists for the real world, and entry-level salaries here start at ₹12 to 18 LPA, climbing to ₹25 to 45 LPA at senior analyst or director level within 5 to 8 years. Firms like Control Risks, Eurasia Group, and Oxford Analytica actively hire this profile globally.

This is the most in-demand IR career right now. Every Indian company going global and every international company entering India needs someone who understands the intersection of politics, culture, and business risk. You decide where they invest and where they shouldn't. This role sits inside strategy consulting firms, multinational expansion teams, and international business development divisions. An IR degree combined with a business or economics qualification is the strongest entry profile.
Degree: BA IR + MBA/Economics
Employers: McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Global MNCs, Indian Conglomerates

Entry route: BA in IR or Economics, then an MBA at ISB, IIM-A/B/C, INSEAD, or London Business School. Consulting firms recruit heavily from these programmes for market-entry and international strategy roles.
Right for: students who are equally comfortable with numbers and country-level nuance, and who want the fastest route into consulting-grade pay. Least suited to students who dislike frequent travel or presenting directly to senior stakeholders, both are standard here. This is also the most competitive of the three, so a strong academic record and a sharp case-interview prep matter more than for the other two.

How to Build an IR Career That Pays Well
The career path formula for IR students: Strong undergraduate foundation (BA IR/Political Science/Economics) + one business or analytical qualification (MBA, MA Public Policy, or Economics MSc) + one international experience (internship, exchange programme, or research project) = a highly employable, globally competitive profile.
The universities that are globally strongest for this path include LSE, Sciences Po, Columbia SIPA, and Georgetown, but Indian students who get strong undergraduate foundations at JNU, Ashoka, or OP Jindal and add a foreign master's degree consistently land global roles. The path is clear. Very few students are following it.

Do I need to clear UPSC to build a career in International Relations?
No. Global policy consulting, geopolitical risk analysis, and international business strategy are all private-sector roles that hire IR graduates directly. UPSC and the foreign service are one path into IR, not the only one.
